Indian Army Inaugurates Rung Heritage & Cultural Centre in Dharchula to Preserve Himalayan Legacy

DHARCHULA, Uttarakhand MAY 22,2026 — Recognizing that cultural heritage is a vital pillar of national strength and identity, the Indian Army has taken a major step toward preserving the rich legacy of the Himalayas. In the remote, high-altitude terrains of the Vyas Valley and Dharchula, the resilient Rung Community of Kumaon has long maintained its unique traditions, art, and language. To honor and safeguard this invaluable cultural wealth, the Sentinels of the Panchshul Brigade have officially established the Rung Heritage & Cultural Centre in Dharchula.

The center was formally inaugurated by Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, GOC-in-C Central Command, underscoring the Indian Army’s deep-rooted and enduring commitment to supporting and uplifting border region communities. Far more than just a physical building, this newly minted center serves as a living symbol of social inclusion, local pride, and nation-building. Going forward, the Rung Heritage & Cultural Centre will act as a vibrant, dedicated platform designed to protect, celebrate, and pass down the unique traditions, indigenous art forms, and distinct language of the Rung community for generations to come.
