RAJOURI, J&K — July 13, 2026: In a continuing effort to strengthen community ties and support local nomadic populations, the Indian Army organized an interactive session with the Gujjar and Bakkarwal tribes today at Banj village in the Rajouri district.
The Gujjar and Bakkarwals, who make up approximately 11% of Jammu & Kashmir’s total population, possess a historically rich Himalayan culture and traditionally follow a nomadic lifestyle that involves an annual seasonal migration to the higher reaches of the Pir Panjal Ranges. A total of 34 community members attended the event, which focused on addressing the unique challenges they face during these seasonal moves, streamlining necessary migration documentation, raising awareness about the Forest Rights Act of 2006, and discussing better educational opportunities for their children.
The local attendees highly praised the Indian Army’s dedicated initiative to listen to their grievances during this crucial migratory phase, a gesture that further cements the enduring bond of trust and cooperation between the Awam (the public) and the armed forces.
