India weather update severe heatwave to persist across northwest and central regions says IMD
NEW DELHI, May 22, 2026 — The India Meteorological Department announced on Friday that severe heatwave conditions are projected to persist across the plains of northwest India, central and east India, and parts of the peninsular region over the next six to seven days.
Weather officials confirmed that heatwave conditions will affect isolated areas of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh from May 22 to May 28, with severe heatwave intensity specifically expected to hit eastern parts of both states during this timeframe.
Similarly, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are forecast to experience high temperatures throughout the week, with the most severe conditions anticipated between May 24 and May 27.
Rajasthan will also face intense heat during this period, turning into a severe heatwave in western pockets from May 24 to May 28.
Furthermore, parts of Vidharbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana, Coastal Andhra, Yanam, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are scheduled to witness varying degrees of heatwave conditions, while uncomfortably warm night conditions are predicted to impact parts of Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Odisha, and Telangana over the coming days.
