IGP Kashmir Evaluates Security Framework for Shri Amarnath Yatra and Muharram 2026

SRINAGAR, JUNE 08: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone, V. K. Birdi, chaired a high-level security meeting at the Police Control Room (PCR) Kashmir to review the operational and logistical arrangements for the smooth conduct of the Shri Amarnathji Yatra (SANJY-2026) and the upcoming Muharram observances across the valley. Attended by all Range DIGs, district Senior Superintendents of Police (SSsP), and senior officers from across Kashmir, the meeting featured detailed briefings on district-wise preparedness, pilgrim safety protocols, and route management strategies. Reviewing the overall framework, Birdi emphasized strict adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and robust inter-agency coordination to handle any operational or natural contingencies through a synchronized response mechanism.

Placing pilgrim safety as the highest priority, Birdi thoroughly assessed the deployment of Road Opening Parties (ROPs) and directed officers to enhance surveillance, enforce regular area domination, and continuously monitor highways and vulnerable stretches along the Yatra routes. In addition to strengthening nighttime security and maintaining heightened alertness, the IGP ordered comprehensive security measures at all Yatra camps, including the immediate deployment of sufficient manpower and the installation of surveillance systems at key locations. He also instructed district heads to conduct mock drills to test existing SOPs and refine operational efficiency ahead of the pilgrimage. Turning to the upcoming Muharram observances, Birdi mandated adequate security deployment, effective traffic management plans, and seamless communication with civil administration and local procession organizers to ensure public safety and the peaceful conduct of all religious events across the region.
