Ladakh achieves historic milestone with eight GI tags for traditional crafts
LEH, June 18, 2026 :- Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announced a historic milestone for Ladakh as eight traditional products have been officially awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication tag. The newly certified products include Ladakh Challi Textiles, Ladakh Thigma, Ladakh Painting, Pabu of Ladakh, Ladakh Nambu Textile, Ladakh Pashmina Textile, Ladakh Chilling Metal Work, and Ladakh Likir Pottery.
The Lieutenant Governor highlighted that these certifications serve as a tribute to the centuries-old craftsmanship, artistry, and cultural heritage of the local population. He emphasized that each product reflects the unique identity of the region and the creative brilliance of its artisans.
The acquisition of the GI tags is expected to provide global recognition, authenticity, and legal protection for local crafts. This development aims to empower regional artisans with better economic opportunities and ensure the preservation of the unique cultural traditions of Ladakh.
