Leh Old Town to undergo major infrastructure and aesthetic transformation
LEH, June 7, 2026 — Comprehensive infrastructure and aesthetic development efforts have commenced in the heritage precinct of Old Town Leh, following a field visit and executive directives issued on March 15 to safeguard the area’s distinct regional architecture.
Under the initiative, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved a 7.62 crore rupee project aimed at a complete urban and cosmetic turnaround of the historic locality. The extensive modernization framework plans for the development of a multi-purpose underground utility network, heritage-style pedestrian walkways, uniform commercial signages, and ornamental street lighting, alongside upgraded public amenities, all while strictly preserving the unique traditional character of Ladakh’s cultural and historical epicenter.
The development package marks a major intervention toward improving civic facilities, local urban aesthetics, and the overall visitor experience in one of the most prominent heritage and tourism hubs of the Himalayan region.
Regional authorities emphasized that the project underscores an administrative commitment to transforming Leh into a clean, well-organized, pedestrian-friendly, and world-class travel destination. Crucially, the planned modifications have been structured to ensure that the rich cultural landscape of the heritage sector is protected and sustained for future generations.
