DFO Bhaderwah Urges Public to Avoid Collecting Driftwood from Rivers, Nallas, and Streams

Bhaderwah, Aug 31: The Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Bhaderwah, Devender Kumar, has appealed to the residents of Bhaderwah and adjoining areas to refrain from collecting driftwood and timber from the River Chenab, nallas, and streams in the aftermath of recent heavy rains and floods.

The official warning comes after large quantities of wood and forest produce were swept into water bodies during the flash floods. The DFO cautioned that venturing close to swollen rivers and streams is extremely dangerous, with strong currents, slippery banks, and sudden water surges posing a grave threat to human life.

Citing legal provisions, Kumar reminded that under Section 45 of the Indian Forest Act, 1927, all driftwood and forest produce deposited in rivers and streams is deemed Government property. Unauthorized collection or possession of such material amounts to a punishable offence under the law.

“The safety of people is our foremost concern. Collecting drifted wood not only endangers lives but also violates forest laws. I appeal to all residents to cooperate with the Forest Department and stay away from nallas, streams, and the Chenab,” he said.

The Forest Department has directed its Range Officers and field staff to maintain strict vigil and initiate legal action against violators. Meanwhile, the DFO urged the public to act responsibly and avoid putting their lives at risk for illegal collection of forest produce.
