Leh Airport Expansion: LG Ladakh Sets July 2026 Deadline for New Terminal to Boost Passenger Capacity to 3 Million
LEH, April 09, 2026 :- Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, conducted a comprehensive inspection of the upcoming terminal building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport today, issuing a strict directive to officials to expedite construction for a July 2026 completion.
To ensure the project meets this ambitious timeline, the LG has mandated the deployment of additional manpower and the implementation of a round-the-clock execution shift.
The state-of-the-art facility, which features culturally inspired architecture and expanded aircraft bays, is designed to drastically scale up the airport’s operations from the current 18 flights to 45 flights per day.
Once fully operational, the terminal is expected to handle approximately 3 million passengers annually, effectively transforming Ladakh’s connectivity with the rest of the country.
Highlighting the project as a central pillar of the vision envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, LG Saxena emphasized that the upgraded infrastructure will serve as a powerful catalyst for the regional economy by skyrocketing tourist footfall and creating new livelihood opportunities for the local population.
The Lieutenant Governor reaffirmed the UT Administration’s total support in removing any administrative bottlenecks to ensure the timely operationalization of this “dream initiative.”
By nearly tripling the airport’s capacity, the new terminal aims to provide a world-class travel experience that reflects Ladakh’s unique heritage while meeting the growing demands of modern aviation and tourism.
