JAMMU, JANUARY 16, 2026: A weak western disturbance is set to impact Jammu and Kashmir over the next 24 hours, ending a prolonged dry spell with expectations of light snow and rain across various parts of the region.
According to the latest forecast, fresh snowfall is highly likely in high-altitude areas including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, Zojila Pass, Sinthan Top, Peer Ki Gali, and Sadhna Top. While the upper reaches brace for a winter dusting, the plains are expected to remain mostly cloudy, though isolated instances of light rain or very light snow cannot be entirely ruled out in some low-lying areas.
The weather shift comes as a relief to the region, which has been experiencing intense cold wave conditions during the ongoing Chillai-Kalan period. Travelers and residents in mountainous districts are advised to stay updated on road conditions, particularly across major passes where visibility and traction may be affected.
Although this current system is categorized as weak, it marks the beginning of a series of disturbances expected to influence the Union Territory’s weather pattern in the coming days.
