Jammu Civil Secretariat Sealed Amid Protests Over SMVDIME Medical College Admissions

JAMMU | January 06, 2026: Heavy security was deployed and the Civil Secretariat in Jammu was effectively sealed on Tuesday as authorities moved to pre-empt a planned demonstration by the newly formed Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti. Hundreds of police personnel, overseen by senior officers, established a high-security perimeter around the government hub to prevent any potential law and order disruptions.

The protest stems from a brewing controversy regarding MBBS admissions at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), with the Samiti alleging religious bias in the selection of non-Hindu students.

Government Refutes Allegations of Bias:- The Sangharsh Samiti has called for a total rescission of the current admission process or the closure of the medical college, even threatening a wider escalation through signature campaigns and public boycotts. Leaders of the group have further alleged a “misuse of shrine funds” and are seeking direct intervention from the Lieutenant Governor and central leadership.

In response, the Jammu and Kashmir government has issued a firm clarification, stating that all admissions at the medical institute have been conducted strictly on the basis of merit through established national norms.

Officials reiterated that religious affiliation plays no role in the selection process, which adheres to the standard regulations governing medical education in India.

Despite the tension, authorities confirmed that the situation remains under control and the sealing of the Secretariat was a precautionary measure to maintain public order in the sensitive high-security zone. While right-wing organizations continue to raise objections to the admission results, the administration has signaled it will not allow unauthorized gatherings to disrupt official business.

Security forces remain on high alert as they monitor the Samiti’s next move, emphasizing that no protesters will be permitted near the Secretariat premises until further notice.
