Jammu Police Seize 15 Quintals of Smuggled Khair Wood Transported on Camels in Gharota
JAMMU, December 29, 2025: In a unique and successful anti-smuggling operation, the Jammu (Rural) Police, in collaboration with the Forest Department, intercepted a major attempt to transport illegal timber using camels in the Gharota area.
Acting on specific intelligence regarding the unconventional transport of Khair wood, a joint tactical team conducted a high-stakes midnight raid between December 28 and 29 at Sarote village. The operation led to the interception of two camels heavily laden with approximately 10 to 15 quintals of illicitly felled Khair wood intended for commercial sale.
The use of camels, a rare sight in such smuggling activities in this region, underscores the evolving tactics used by timber syndicates to bypass traditional checkpoints. Following the seizure, the Jammu Police completed all necessary legal formalities, taking both the contraband and the animals into custody. A formal report has been lodged at the Gharota Police Station, and the seized timber is being handed over to the Forest Department for further legal proceedings under the Forest Act.
This crackdown reflects the administration’s intensified efforts to protect forest resources and dismantle smuggling networks operating within the Jammu district.
