Union Budget: Centre Allocates ₹1,086 Crore to Boost Jammu and Kashmir Rail Infrastructure

JAMMU, February 3, 2026 — Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a significant financial boost for Jammu and Kashmir, revealing an allocation of approximately ₹1,086 crore in the latest rail budget to strengthen regional connectivity and infrastructure. During a virtual press conference, the Minister highlighted that this funding is part of a broader commitment to the region, which also includes ₹5,673 crore for Punjab and ₹2,911 crore for Himachal Pradesh.

Vaishnaw emphasized the vital role of the Vande Bharat Express in maintaining public service during harsh winter months when road links are often severed, noting that the trains also celebrate regional identity by serving traditional Dogri and Kashmiri cuisines.

While infrastructure preparations from Baramulla to Uri are complete and awaiting final approval, and the Jammu-Rajouri rail project survey is progressing rapidly, the Minister noted that additional lines along the Baramulla-Srinagar section have been paused to protect local apple orchards following concerns from stakeholders.

Complementing this vision, Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Kumar stated that the goal is to transform the railway into an all-weather economic lifeline that drives tourism, employment, and overall development across the Union Territory.
