UDHAMPUR, March 4, 2026 — In a major breakthrough against narcotics smuggling, the Udhampur Police successfully arrested a high-profile absconder who had been evading capture for nearly two and a half years following a massive drug haul.

The case dates back to October 12, 2023, when a police team from the Rehambal Police Station intercepted a Honda City vehicle near the Phalata cut point on the National Highway.

Upon spotting the checkpoint, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene, leading to the recovery of 105.06 kg of poppy straw concealed within the car. Following the incident, an FIR (No. 265/2023) was registered under Sections 8/15 of the NDPS Act.

After prolonged tracking and sustained intelligence efforts, a specialized team led by PSI Rhythan Sharma, under the supervision of SHO Rehambal Inspector Purshottam, tracked down and arrested the accused, identified as Rakesh Kumar, son of Girdhari Lal and a resident of Bishnah, Jammu.

The police have initiated further investigations to uncover any potential links to wider drug trafficking networks.
