Tragic Truck Accident at Digdol Ramban: Driver from Ganderbal Killed as Vehicle Plunges into 900-Foot Gorge
RAMBAN, March 21, 2026 — A tragic road accident claimed the life of a truck driver in the early hours of Saturday after his vehicle skidded off the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and plunged into a deep gorge near Gujar Morh, Digdol. Upon receiving information at approximately 06:30 hours, a massive joint rescue operation was launched by the Ramban Police, Civil QRT, SDRF, and the 23 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), supported by local volunteers.
Despite the challenging terrain and the vehicle falling nearly 900 meters, teams managed to recover the body of the deceased after strenuous efforts. The victim has been identified as Hilal Ahmed, son of Ghulam Qadir Laherwal and a resident of Mansbal, District Ganderbal.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the ill-fated truck, bearing registration number JK13D-4430, was transit from Jammu toward Srinagar.
Electronic surveillance showed the vehicle crossing the Chenani Toll Plaza at 01:03 hours, with the fatal accident occurring around 02:40 hours when the driver reportedly lost control at a sharp curve. Following the recovery, Police Station Ramban registered Case FIR No. 65/2026 under relevant legal sections to initiate a formal probe.
In the wake of this tragedy, District Police Ramban has issued a stern advisory to the driving community, urging motorists to avoid operating vehicles when experiencing fatigue to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents on the treacherous highway.
