Srinagar Police Intensify Crackdown on Unregistered Hotels and Homestays: Fines and Legal Action Initiated
SRINAGAR, January 10,2026: In a major regulatory sweep to ensure tourist safety and legal compliance, the Srinagar Police, in coordination with the Tourist Police Station, conducted a massive verification drive across the city’s hospitality sector.
During the inspection, several prominent establishments were found operating without mandatory government registration, in clear violation of the J&K Registration of Tourist Trade Act.
The hotels identified for non-compliance include Essar, ABC Residency, Gani, and Aksa, while unregistered homestays such as Al Habib, Golden Moon, and Divine Holiday were also flagged.
Authorities immediately imposed heavy fines on the violators and announced that preventive legal proceedings under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) would be initiated against the owners.
This enforcement drive comes as part of a broader effort to promote responsible tourism and maintain high security standards following recent inspections in areas like Humhama and Rajbagh. The Srinagar Police have issued a stern advisory to all hotel, guest house, and homestay operators, emphasizing that failure to register with the competent authorities or neglecting mandatory reporting (such as Form-C for foreign guests) will lead to strict criminal action and potential sealing of properties.
By targeting unregistered accommodations, the department aims to eliminate unregulated stay options that bypass safety protocols, ensuring a secure environment for visitors during the busy winter season.
