Srinagar 20 December :- Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, officially inaugurated Pheran Day and Jashn-e-Chilai-Kalan at Kashmir Haat today, marking the traditional commencement of the Valley’s intense forty-day winter period.
Organised by the Handicrafts & Handloom Department, the two-day event celebrates the iconic Kashmiri pheran as a symbol of cultural identity while providing a vibrant platform for local artisans to showcase indigenous winter wear and handloom products. During his visit to the various stalls, the Divisional Commissioner praised the skill of local craftsmen and expressed satisfaction over the increasing involvement of youth in preserving the region’s rich artisanal legacy.
Beyond the cultural festivities, which included musical performances and exhibitions, Garg addressed winter preparedness, expressing optimism that the forecasted snowfall would boost tourism while simultaneously issuing a critical safety warning.
He urged the general public to strictly adhere to the government’s Fire Prevention Advisory and conduct thorough audits of heating appliances to prevent fire incidents, ensuring that the spirit of Chilai-e-Kalan remains both celebratory and safe for all residents.
