Special Investigation Team (SIT) Formed to Probe Assassination Attempt on Farooq Abdullah in Jammu

JAMMU, March 14, 2026 — The Jammu and Kashmir Police has officially constituted a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a high-level probe into the attempted assassination of former Chief Minister and National Conference President, Farooq Abdullah.

The order, issued by Bhim Sen Tuti, Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the Jammu Zone, follows a chilling security breach on the night of March 11, where an assailant targeted the veteran leader at a private event.The incident occurred at approximately 10:10 PM while Dr. Abdullah was departing a wedding ceremony at the Royal Park Banquet Hall in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu.

According to official reports, an individual, later identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, brandished a revolver and attempted to open fire at the protectee from point-blank range.

The prompt and decisive action of the police personnel and the Close Protection Team (CPT) deployed with the National Security Guard (NSG) protectee successfully foiled the attack, ensuring Dr. Abdullah escaped unharmed.

Following the attempt, a criminal case (FIR No. 29/2026) was registered at Police Station Gangyal under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act.Acknowledging the extreme “seriousness and sensitivity” of the case, the IGP Jammu has placed the SIT under the direct supervision of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the JSK Range.

The team is led by Sanjay Sharma, SSP (SO to DIG, JSK Range), and includes several high-ranking officers: Irshad Hussain Rather (SP Hqrs. Jammu), Arvind Kumar Sambyal (Dy.SP, RPHQ, Jammu), and four experienced Inspectors including the SHO of Police Station Gangyal.

The SIT has been mandated to complete the investigation thoroughly and promptly, adhering to strict statutory timeframes to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy behind the attack.
