Shopian District Mandates GPS Installation for Mineral Extraction and Transport Vehicles
SHOPIAN, January 12, 2026: In a significant move to curb illegal mining and enhance administrative transparency, the District Mineral Office of Shopian has issued a formal directive requiring the mandatory installation of AIS-140 approved GPS tracking devices on all vehicles and machinery involved in mineral extraction and transportation.
This order aligns with the 2020 guidelines from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and follows specific instructions from the Directorate of Geology & Mining, Jammu and Kashmir.
The initiative is designed to ensure real-time monitoring of all mineral-related activities across the district, effectively streamlining the oversight process for local authorities.
Under the new regulations, all mineral concessionaires, stone crusher units, brick kiln operators, and individual vehicle owners must procure and install these tracking devices from vendors empanelled by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
Furthermore, the administration has clarified that the movement of minerals will only be authorized if accompanied by a valid e-Challan featuring a verifiable QR code, which must be generated through the Department’s official online portal.
These integrated measures aim to create a digital trail for every load of mineral extracted, making it significantly harder for unauthorized operators to bypass legal channels.Stakeholders have been given a strict deadline of January 20, 2026, to ensure full compliance with the GPS installation requirement.
The District Mineral Office warned that any failure to adhere to these directions will result in stringent legal action under the prevailing provisions of the law.
By enforcing these technological safeguards, the Shopian district administration intends to protect natural resources and ensure that all mining activities contribute fairly to the regional economy while adhering to environmental safety standards.
