SPATTAN, Jan 20, 2026 — A major tragedy was averted on Tuesday morning when security forces detected and successfully defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the high-traffic Srinagar–Baramulla National Highway.

The explosive was discovered planted on the roadside in the Tappar area of Pattan, located in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. The detection occurred during a routine road-opening operation conducted by a joint team consisting of the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles and personnel from the Pattan Police.

The timely intervention prevented a potential attack on the vital artery used frequently by both civilian and military convoys.Upon spotting the suspicious device, security personnel immediately cordoned off the entire area and suspended all vehicular movement as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.

A Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was rushed to the site, where they safely neutralized the IED without any damage or loss of life.

Following the successful operation and a thorough sanitization of the surrounding area, traffic on the Srinagar–Baramulla National Highway was fully restored. Authorities have intensified patrolling in the region as a high alert remains in place to thwart any further attempts at disruption.
