PM Narendra Modi Celebrates Pongal 2026: Tamil Culture as India’s Shared Heritage
New Delhi January 14 , 2026 :- Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the Pongal celebrations in New Delhi today, hailing the occasion as a “global festival” that transcends borders. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister emphasized that Tamil culture represents a shared heritage for the entire nation and plays a vital role in strengthening the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat. He expressed personal pride in India’s vibrant Tamil traditions, noting that his recent visits to historic sites like the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple and Rameswaram have further deepened his connection to the greatness of Tamil history and its enduring energy of cultural unity.
Focusing on the agricultural roots of the festival, Modi highlighted that Tamil culture regards the farmer as the foundation of life, a sentiment echoed extensively in the ancient wisdom of the Thirukkural. He praised farmers as essential partners in nation-building and key drivers of the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) mission. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to farmer empowerment, noting that their toil and dedication are what provide strength to the country’s economy and food security.
The Prime Minister also used the occasion to advocate for environmental consciousness, stating that Pongal inspires us to make respect for nature a way of life. He emphasized that preserving soil health and conserving water are responsibilities we owe to future generations, linking these values to national initiatives like Mission LiFE and the ‘Per Drop, More Crop’ campaign.
