One Dead, Several Rescued as Massive Landslide Hits HRT Project Site in Kishtwar’s Dangduru
KISHTWAR, J&K | March 16, 2026 — A tragic landslide struck the Head Race Tunnel (HRT) project site in the Dangduru area of Kishtwar on Monday, triggering a massive multi-agency rescue operation.
According to official reports, one body has been recovered from the debris so far, while five other workers sustained minor injuries.
The disaster initially left approximately seven people trapped under the rubble; however, tireless efforts by rescuers have led to the successful extraction of three individuals.
As of Monday afternoon, local laborers and officials report that two to three persons remain missing, with their status currently unknown due to severely hampered network connectivity in the remote mountainous region.
The rescue mission is being carried out by a coordinated team including the District Administration, J&K Police, and the Indian Army, all of whom are working against time to locate the remaining victims. Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear the massive mounds of earth and rock that buried the construction site.
While the search and rescue operation continues in full swing, authorities have noted that further details are awaited as teams navigate the challenging terrain and communication blackouts.
The incident has once again highlighted the high-risk nature of infrastructure projects in the ecologically fragile zones of the Chenab Valley.
