Omar Abdullah tough on rogue meat sellers: J&K launches surprise food safety blitz

Srinagar, August 11 – Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has ordered an aggressive crackdown on the sale of substandard meat and adulterated food products after growing public outcry over food safety violations. In a statement issued via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Abdullah emphasized that consumer health is non-negotiable, warning that lax enforcement will not be tolerated.

The Food Safety Department has been tasked with conducting unannounced raids, particularly targeting meat markets, to ensure compliance with hygiene and quality regulations. Businesses found flouting norms will face severe penalties, including heavy fines and immediate shutdowns. The Chief Minister also directed municipal authorities, police, and market regulators to coordinate closely for a sustained enforcement drive.

The move comes amid rising complaints about the sale of unhygienic and poor-quality meat across several J&K districts, sparking demands for stricter oversight. The government aims to restore public trust in food markets by intensifying inspections and encouraging citizens to report violations. Abdullah’s intervention signals a zero-tolerance approach as authorities ramp up efforts to safeguard consumer health.
