NMC Cancels Recognition of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical Institute: BJP Hails Decision for Upholding Academic Standards
JAMMU, JANUARY 07, 2026: In a major development concerning medical education in the region, J&K BJP President and Rajya Sabha Member Sat Sharma CA, alongside senior party general secretaries, addressed a press conference today to support the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) decision to de-recognize the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence.
Following an intensive assessment by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on January 2, 2026, the NMC identified “grave shortcomings” in the institution’s infrastructure and clinical standards.
The party leadership emphasized that this professional intervention was necessary to protect the integrity of medical training and ensure patient safety, effectively ending weeks of public protests and concerns regarding the institution’s management.
The NMC’s assessment report revealed critical deficiencies that made the college unfit for medical instruction, including a 39% shortage of teaching faculty and a 65% deficit of senior residents and tutors. Clinical exposure was also found to be severely lacking, with OPD attendance recorded at less than half of the mandatory requirement and bed occupancy sitting at just 45% against the necessary 80%. Sat Sharma pointed out that the institution, which is sustained by donations from devotees and the faith of the community, failed to meet nearly all basic requirements for a functional medical college.
He expressed gratitude to Union Minister JP Nadda and the national leadership for their oversight in safeguarding the public interest.
Addressing the concerns of enrolled students, the BJP leadership reassured the public that those already selected for admission will be adjusted into other well-functioning medical colleges beyond their regular intake capacity, ensuring no student’s career is jeopardized by the institution’s failure. While clarifying that the party remained focused on facts and regulatory norms rather than communal or political narratives, Sharma requested Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to further investigate any lingering irregularities or legal violations within the Shrine Board-run institution.
He concluded by noting that such de-recognitions are a standard part of the NMC’s professional regulatory process to maintain high-quality healthcare standards nationwide.
