New Delhi January 17 , 2026 :- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several transformative rail and road infrastructure projects totaling over ₹3,250 crore in Malda, West Bengal. A major highlight of the event was the launch of India’s first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper train, connecting Howrah and Guwahati. Modi emphasized that this “Made in India” initiative marks a significant leap in the modernization of Indian Railways, offering an airline-like experience at economical fares while reducing travel time between the land of Mother Kali and Mother Kamakhya by approximately 2.5 hours. He noted that the expansion of these sleeper trains across the country would revolutionize long-distance travel, making it more comfortable and efficient for all citizens.
In addition to the sleeper service, the Prime Minister flagged off four new Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting North Bengal to major hubs like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Nagercoil, and Tiruchchirappalli. These services are designed to provide affordable and reliable long-distance connectivity for students, migrant workers, and pilgrims visiting sites like Gangasagar and Dakshineswar. The infrastructure push also included the foundation stone laying for a new rail line between Balurghat and Hili, the electrification of key routes, and the development of next-generation freight and maintenance facilities. Modi highlighted that India has become a global leader in rail technology, now manufacturing more locomotives than Europe and America combined, which continues to drive economic growth and job creation for the nation’s youth.
