Mughal Road Snow Clearance Reaches Peer Ki Gali; Route Remains Closed to Traffic Amid Safety Checks

SHOPIAN, Jan 2, 2026 — The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully cleared a significant stretch of the historic Mughal Road, reaching the high-altitude Peer Ki Gali pass from the Shopian side.

Utilizing heavy machinery to navigate deep snowdrifts and improve the road surface, the BRO team has made substantial progress in restoring the vital link that connects the Kashmir Valley with the Rajouri and Poonch districts.

However, despite these intensive efforts, officials have confirmed that the Mughal Road remains strictly closed to all vehicular traffic until further notice, as critical safety inspections and additional clearance operations are still underway.

Authorities have issued a strong advisory to commuters and transporters, urging them to refrain from attempting any travel on the route until a formal reopening order is sanctioned. The current closure is a precautionary measure to ensure that the road is entirely free of black ice and potential avalanche threats before allowing civilian passage.

While local residents have lauded the BRO’s rapid response in clearing the Shopian-Peer Ki Gali stretch, the administration emphasizes that full connectivity will only be restored once the entire mountain pass is declared safe for public transit.
