Mehbooba Mufti Visits Iranian Embassy to Condole Khamenei’s Death; Raises Concern for Stranded Students
NEW DELHI, March 9, 2026 — Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, visited the Iranian Cultural Centre and Embassy in Delhi on Monday to offer her formal condolences following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In a post shared on X, Mufti expressed her deepest sympathies to the people of Iran during this period of national mourning, paying tribute to the late leader whom she described as a martyr.
Her visit follows a week of widespread protests in the Kashmir Valley and her vocal criticism of the global silence surrounding the February 28 airstrikes that claimed the lives of the Supreme Leader and several family members.
Beyond the diplomatic gesture, the PDP president utilized the meeting with the Iranian Ambassador to address the urgent humanitarian crisis involving Indian citizens currently in Iran.
Mufti specifically raised the issue of Kashmiri students who have been stranded in the country amidst the escalating regional conflict and domestic instability.
Urging the Ambassador for swift cooperation and safety assurances, she emphasized the growing anxiety of families back home and called for a coordinated effort to ensure the secure and timely evacuation of all students and pilgrims caught in the crossfire of the unfolding war.
