Udhampur 16th August :- A huge landslide caused by continuous heavy rain struck the Darsoo region of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir this morning, totally blocking vital Dhar Road and leaving hundreds of travelers and truckers in a state of wide-scale disruption. The landslide, with enormous boulders and loose rocks, came down onto the road, making it impassable, and completely blocked the road tunnel too.
Dhar Road is designated as the shortest and most vital connection between Udhampur and Lakhanpur, and adjacent districts Samba and Kathua. Its importance increased with time, particularly as a substitute entry road for truckers and travelers going towards Kashmir valley carrying goods, so today’s blockade is a huge impediment to the movement of goods and people alike.
Despite the size and intensity of the landslide, reports indicate that there has been no loss of life or property so far. On being informed of the Landslide, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the department responsible for keeping this vital lifeline intact, despatched men and machinery to both sides of the obstructed road at once. Clearance work began in earnest, with an initial thrust on clearing the big boulders and wreckage to at least re-establish partial connectivity.Local authorities remain closely on the lookout, calling for patience and vigilance in the wake of uncertain weather.
The restoration effort is ongoing, yet travelers are cautioned to take alternative routes and check on road conditions before embarking on their trips.
