LPCC Inspects Liquid Waste Management at Chumathang Hot Spring to Protect Indus River

Leh, February 18, 2026 — The Ladakh Pollution Control Committee (LPCC) has launched a comprehensive inspection drive targeting liquid waste management (LWM) systems in the ecologically sensitive Chumathang Hot Spring area.

The operation covered a wide array of commercial establishments, including restaurants, as well as stretches along the Indus River and nearby Indian Army installations. The primary objective of the mission was to evaluate the efficacy of existing wastewater treatment and disposal mechanisms to prevent the contamination of Ladakh’s vital water resources.

During the field assessment, LPCC officials scrutinized technical disposal protocols and issued immediate directives to establishments found with infrastructural deficiencies. Concerned units have been instructed to implement timely rectifications to meet stringent environmental standards.

The committee underscored that strict adherence to these norms is non-negotiable for all stakeholders—including local residents and tourists—to safeguard the fragile Himalayan landscape from irreversible ecological damage. The LPCC further reminded the public of its mandate under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, which empowers the agency to monitor and maintain regional water quality.

The committee issued a stern warning against littering or polluting water bodies, noting that any individual or commercial unit found in violation of environmental laws will face severe penal action. This includes the initiation of legal proceedings and heavy fines to ensure the long-term preservation of the region’s natural heritage.
