Live Mortar Shell Recovered and Safely Neutralized at Rampur Boniyar in Baramulla

Baramulla January 16, 2026 — A major explosive hazard was averted today in the Boniyar area of North Kashmir following the recovery and successful disposal of a live mortar shell. The incident was reported to the Boniyar Police Station by an Indian Army unit stationed at Rampur Boniyar.

According to official sources, the 51 mm live mortar shell was unearthed during routine digging operations at the rear headquarters of the army unit. Recognizing the immediate danger, military personnel promptly alerted the local police to coordinate a safe recovery mission.

Upon receiving the information, a police team led by SHO Boniyar, Inspector Hilal Ahmad, rushed to the spot to secure the perimeter. Requisite safety protocols were immediately activated, with the area being cordoned off to prevent any accidental civilian or casualties.

The Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was called in to handle the volatile ordnance, ensuring that the surrounding infrastructure remained protected during the sensitive operation.

The live shell was eventually destroyed in a controlled explosion by the expert Army BDDS team in the presence of senior police officials. Authorities confirmed that the operation was executed with high precision, resulting in no loss of life or damage to property.

The timely detection and professional coordination between the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police have been credited with preventing a potential mishap in the sensitive border region.
