LG Vinai Kumar Saxena Reviews Water Conservation Projects and Leads Plantation Drive in Ladakh

LEH, March 26, 2026 — In a proactive move to combat the ongoing water crisis in the Union Territory, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena visited the villages of Stok and Chuchot in Leh on Thursday to oversee the development of new water bodies.

As part of a broader administration effort to create sustainable water reservoirs for rural communities, the LG personally inspected the preparation sites and met with local stakeholders.

This initiative is designed to mitigate water scarcity by transforming natural depressions into functional, high-capacity water bodies that will serve the long-term needs of the Ladakhi people.

During his visit, the Lieutenant Governor issued direct instructions to local authorities to prioritize the cleaning, dredging, and de-silting of identified depressions.

To maximize the efficiency of these reservoirs, he ordered that the embankments be stone-pitched, a technical enhancement intended to significantly increase water-holding capacity.

Furthermore, the LG mandated that the concerned departments construct specialized inlet and outlet channels. These engineering measures are aimed at achieving a “zero wastage” goal, ensuring that every drop of seasonal meltwater and precipitation is effectively captured and utilized for the benefit of the villagers.

In addition to the water infrastructure projects, LG Saxena launched a significant ecological restoration program in Chuchot village by planting 200 saplings. This plantation drive, carried out with the active support of local residents, marks a critical step toward restoring the region’s delicate high-altitude ecosystem.

Commending the high level of community spirit, the Lieutenant Governor noted that the enthusiasm of the volunteers who stepped forward to assist the administration was highly encouraging.

He expressed firm confidence that this collaborative approach between the government and the public will yield transformative environmental and developmental results for Ladakh in the coming days.
