Leopard Attack in Katra Leaves Two Brothers Seriously Injured, Sparks Panic in Devmai Sarna Village

KATRA March 05, 2026 — A wave of terror has gripped the Devmai Sarna village near Katra following a brutal leopard attack that left two brothers seriously injured. The victims, identified as Mohammad Shakeel Gagi and Irfan Ali, belong to a nomadic family that traditionally migrates between Srinagar’s Verinag area during the summer months and the forests of Sarna near Katra during the winter season.

The duo was reportedly attacked while in the forest area, sustaining deep wounds before the predator retreated into the dense foliage. Both brothers were immediately rushed for medical treatment, where they are currently recovering from their injuries.

The incident has created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety among the local residents and the nomadic community, as the leopard is believed to be still lurking in the surrounding woodland.

In response to the attack, locals have staged protests demanding immediate intervention, urging the Wildlife and Forest Departments to track and capture the man-eater before it strikes again.

Authorities from the Forest Department have been officially notified and have reportedly dispatched teams to the Devmai Sarna region to monitor the predator’s movement and ensure the safety of the villagers.

This wildlife encounter comes amid a period of unseasonably warm and dry weather in the Jammu division, with temperatures in Katra reaching nearly 30°C and nearby Mirpur hitting a high of 35.5°C, as officials continue to advise residents in Reasi and Katra to remain vigilant during the evening hours.
