Legacy of Valor: How Paratrooper Shabir Ahmad Malik Earned the Kirti Chakra in the Face of Terror

SRINAGAR, March 21, 2026 — Today marks the anniversary of one of the most profound acts of gallantry in the history of the Indian Army’s Special Forces.

Paratrooper Shabir Ahmad Malik of the elite 1 PARA (SF), a son of the Kashmir Valley who chose to stand as its shield, is remembered for his “supreme sacrifice” and extraordinary bravery during a fierce encounter with terrorists on this day in 2009.

On March 21, 2009, while tracking an infiltrating column of terrorists, Paratrooper Malik observed suspicious movement that quickly escalated into a high-stakes firefight.

The terrorists unleashed an overwhelming volume of fire, critically wounding Malik’s “buddy” (partner). Sensing grave danger to his comrades, Malik did not retreat. Instead, he launched a daring counter-offensive, lobbing grenades and charging directly toward the enemy, killing one terrorist at point-blank range.

Even after sustaining serious gunshot wounds, Malik’s focus remained on his brother-in-arms; he managed to pull his wounded buddy to safety under heavy fire. Despite being grievously wounded, he engaged a second terrorist in hand-to-hand combat, neutralizing the threat before refusing evacuation to continue motivating his team.

“His supreme sacrifice led to rare scenes of the Kashmir Valley mourning and honoring him, as many vowed to follow in the martyr’s footsteps.” For his “conspicuous gallantry” and selflessness beyond the call of duty, Paratrooper Shabir Ahmad Malik was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime military decoration.

His story remains a beacon of glory, illustrating the deep bond between the soldier and the motherland.
