Ladakh Weather Forecast: Avalanche Warning and Travel Disruptions Issued for Kargil and Leh Regions
LEH, LADAKH — The Meteorological (MeT) Centre Leh has issued a critical weather update for the Union Territory, reporting active snowfall and rain across the Kargil and Zanskar regions as of the morning of March 29, 2026.
While the Leh district remains under heavy cloud cover, a significant weather system is expected to persist through tomorrow, bringing light to moderate precipitation to many high-altitude areas, including the strategic Khardung La and Chang La passes.
Residents and commuters are urged to prepare for continued overcast conditions and fluctuating temperatures as the system moves through the region.
A serious safety warning has been issued for the period between March 29 and March 31, as the combination of fresh snow and rain significantly increases the risk of avalanches and landslides. Authorities have highlighted the Zojila and Shinkula areas as high-risk zones, warning that these critical mountain passes face a moderate to high probability of closure.
Travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution and postpone non-essential journeys through these corridors until the terrain stabilizes.
In addition to road hazards, the MeT Centre has flagged a moderate risk of flight disruptions at Leh airport on March 30 due to poor visibility and inclement weather.
While a trend toward fairer weather and warmer days is forecasted from March 31 through April 3, the immediate priority remains public safety.
Local administration and the MeT department strongly advise all citizens and tourists to stay updated on the latest road and weather reports to ensure safe transit across the high-desert landscape.
