LEH, LADAKH | January 21, 2026The Meteorological Centre in Leh has issued a comprehensive weather update for the Ladakh region, predicting a significant shift toward wintry conditions over the coming days. As of 8:00 AM today, northern Ladakh—including Siachen and Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO)—is experiencing cold, cloudy conditions with snowfall already occurring over higher peaks.
While the rest of the region remains partly cloudy for now, cloud cover is expected to increase steadily throughout the day, bringing light to moderate snowfall to various mountain passes and high-altitude peaks.
The weather is expected to deteriorate starting tomorrow, January 22, with cold and overcast conditions prevailing. Forecasters warn that snowfall is likely to commence across the region anytime from the late afternoon onwards.
This will lead into the peak of the weather system on January 23 and 24, where moderate snowfall is predicted across most of Ladakh.
Residents in Kargil and the Zanskar area should be particularly prepared, as there is a high probability (over 75%) of heavy snowfall on January 23.
A brief transition to partly cloudy skies is expected on January 25 and early January 26, though snowfall is forecasted to return to Zojila, Kargil, and Zanskar by the evening of the 26th.
This will be followed by another wave of light to moderate snowfall across many areas on January 27.
Travel Advisory and Safety Warnings:-In light of the predicted heavy snow on January 23, authorities have issued a high-risk warning for the closure of major passes, including Zojila, Khardung La, Chang La, Namki La, and Penzila.
Travelers should also anticipate significant disruptions to flight operations on January 23 and 24. The Met Centre advises the public to stay updated with the latest weather reports and plan their journeys accordingly to ensure safety and convenience during this period of intense wintry weather.
