KVK Kathua Named Best Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Jammu & Kashmir for 2025

KATHUA, DECEMBER 25: In a major boost to the region’s agricultural sector, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kathua has been officially declared the Best Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Jammu and Kashmir for 2025. The prestigious award was presented during the three-day Annual Zonal Workshop hosted by the ICAR–Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), Ludhiana, held at SKUAST-Jammu. Dr. Vishal Mahajan, Head Scientist of KVK Kathua, accepted the honor on behalf of the institution, which outperformed numerous centers across Zone-I—a region encompassing J&K, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand.

The selection was based on a rigorous evaluation of eight key performance indicators, including the impact of farmer training, the adoption of climate-resilient practices, and measurable increases in crop yields and farm income. KVK Kathua distinguished itself through its forward-thinking use of GIS tools and social media, the promotion of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and its active support for local agri-startups. Furthermore, the center’s seamless integration with flagship government schemes like PMFBY and RKVY ensured that technological advancements reached even the most remote hilly terrains of the district.Established in 2008 under SKUAST-Jammu, KVK Kathua has spent nearly 18 years transforming the livelihoods of farmers across its 12-hectare campus.

Among its most notable achievements is the revolution of mushroom cultivation, which saw production skyrocket from a mere 1,200 quintals to nearly 10,000 quintals through dedicated capacity-building initiatives. By introducing new cereal varieties and climate-resilient crops specifically for Jandi areas, the Kendra has cemented its role as a model institution for innovation-driven and sustainable agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir.
