Kashmir Weather Update: Rain and Heavy Snowfall Predicted from December 20
SRINAGAR, Dec 19: The Kashmir Valley is bracing for a significant shift in weather as a fresh western disturbance is set to end the dry spell starting the evening of December 20. According to meteorologist Malik Mubeen Ahmed, while the next 24 hours will remain largely dry with only minimal chances of isolated precipitation, a cloudy cover will envelop the region by Saturday evening. This transition is expected to bring widespread rain to the plains and moderate to heavy snowfall across the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.
The weather activity is predicted to intensify on December 21, with North Kashmir likely to be the most affected. High-altitude areas in the north could receive up to one foot of fresh snow, while the plains of Kupwara are expected to see 2–3 inches. Srinagar is also likely to witness its first significant accumulation of the season, with a forecast of 1–2 inches of snow. While another weak western disturbance may affect the region around December 22, the weather is expected to remain mostly dry but cloudy until December 24, followed by a dry spell lasting through December 28. In light of these conditions, authorities have advised tourists, transporters, and travelers to stay updated on road statuses through traffic control rooms, particularly when navigating national highways and mountainous passes.
