Kashmir Schools Reopen Today After Winter Break and Security-Related Delays
SRINAGAR, March 9, 2026 — Classrooms across the Kashmir Valley buzzed with life once again on Monday as educational institutions reopened after an extended winter hiatus of over three months.
While schools were originally slated to resume on March 2, the administration had deferred the reopening as a precautionary measure following widespread protests and regional tension triggered by the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo confirmed that the decision to welcome students back was made after a thorough assessment of the ground situation, ensuring a safe environment for both elementary and higher secondary students, as well as those attending colleges and universities.
The return to school was met with a bright, sunny morning, providing a perfect backdrop for students who had been confined to their homes during the bone-chilling winter months.
In districts like Baramulla, the excitement was palpable as children expressed their joy at reuniting with friends and teachers. “I am keen to meet my friends after so long,” shared Aaira, a private school student, while others noted that even winter tuitions couldn’t match the “charm” of a regular school day.
Educators, including teacher Majid Ganie, welcomed the move, expressing hope that students had utilized the long break productively and are now ready to resume their academic journey with renewed vigor.
