Kashmir Power Crisis: Heavy Snowfall Triggers Major Grid Outage as Load Drops to 100 MW

Srinagar, January 23, 2026: The Chief Minister’s Office of Jammu and Kashmir has reported a massive power crisis in the Valley following severe weather conditions that have crippled the electrical infrastructure.

According to a statement released Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) via the CMO’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, the active power load in the region has plummeted to less than 100 MW, a stark contrast to the usual demand of 1700 MW.

This drastic drop is attributed to the outage of nearly all 33KV feeders, including those essential for providing emergency services across the district.

Dedicated technical teams are currently on the ground working toward rectification, but recovery efforts are facing significant challenges. Officials noted that extensive tree falls onto power lines combined with high-velocity winds are creating major hurdles for repair crews.

While a comprehensive damage assessment is currently underway, authorities have warned that it will take time to complete the evaluation and restore normalcy due to the prevailing hazardous weather conditions.

Residents have been advised to exercise patience as the administration prioritizes the restoration of critical lines feeding hospitals and other vital installations.
