Kashmir and Jammu Weather Update: Bone-Chilling Cold Grips Valley as Temperatures Plummet Below Freezing
SRINAGAR, January 15, 2026 – Intense cold wave conditions continue to sweep across the region, with the Kashmir Valley recording sub-zero temperatures at nearly all stations today.
According to the latest data compiled by Kashmir Weather, South Kashmir’s Pulwama and Shopian emerged as the coldest spots in the valley, with the mercury plunging to a freezing -6.1°C. In Srinagar, the summer capital recorded a minimum of -3.9°C, while the Srinagar Airport and the tourist hub of Pahalgam saw temperatures drop further to -5.0°C.
Other major locations like Sonamarg (-5.8°C), Anantnag (-5.7°C), and Sopore (-5.7°C) also experienced a severe freeze, while the ski resort of Gulmarg remained cold at -3.2°C.
The freezing conditions also extended into parts of the Jammu region, though general temperatures there remained slightly higher. Udhampur recorded a sub-zero minimum of -0.4°C, followed closely by Bhaderwah at -0.1°C and Rajouri at 0.3°C.
Jammu city recorded a low of 4.4°C, while Katra, the base camp for the Vaishno Devi shrine, was relatively warmer at 6.8°C. In contrast, higher reaches like Banihal (1.9°C) and Kishtwar (1.0°C) hovered just above the freezing mark.
This widespread dip in temperature has intensified the ongoing winter chill, leading to frozen water bodies in parts of the Valley and making daily life challenging for residents across the Union Territory.
