BENGALURU, Jan 20, 2026 — The Karnataka government has officially suspended senior IPS officer Dr. K. Ramachandra Rao (KN:1993), Director General of Police (Civil Rights Enforcement), following the viral spread of controversial videos allegedly showing him in an inappropriate manner inside his official chamber.
According to Government Order DPAR/26/SPS/2026, dated January 19, 2026, the administration found the officer’s conduct “unbecoming of a government servant” and in violation of Rule 3 of the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968.
The order, signed by Under Secretary KV Ashoka, places Rao under immediate suspension pending a formal inquiry.
During this period, he is prohibited from leaving the headquarters without written state permission and will be paid a subsistence allowance under the All India Service (Discipline & Appeal) Rules, 1969.
The DGP’s Defense: Fabricated and AI-Morphed :- Responding to the severe administrative action, Dr. Ramachandra Rao has vehemently denied the authenticity of the footage, labeling it a “fabricated lie” and a targeted conspiracy.
Speaking to reporters, Rao asserted that the videos were likely AI-generated or morphed to malign his reputation. He suggested that if the clips contain any real elements, they might be distorted footage from his tenure in Belagavi nearly eight years ago. “I am shocked.
This is all false. In this era of digital manipulation, anything can be created to scuttle a career,” Rao stated, adding that he is consulting with legal experts to file a case against those responsible for circulating the content.
Chief Minister Orders High-Level Probe:- Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has underscored the government’s stance on the matter, confirming that a high-level investigation has been initiated. “We have examined the reports and are prima facie satisfied that suspension is necessary. No one is above the law, regardless of their rank,” the CM remarked.
While the DGP maintains his innocence, the state’s Home Department is under immense pressure as this marks the second major controversy for Rao in a year, following a previous probe involving his stepdaughter. The government has indicated that final disciplinary measures will depend entirely on the findings of the inquiry into the video’s authenticity.
