SRINAGAR, J&K — January 24, 2026The intense Western Disturbance that gripped Jammu and Kashmir over the last 48 hours has officially moved out of the region, leaving behind a significantly altered landscape.
While the system has exited, it delivered a final overnight punch, adding several inches of fresh snow to already blanketed districts including Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Baramulla, Budgam, Bandipora, and Kishtwar.
In a rare and historic meteorological event, Rajouri town also witnessed a significant snowfall spell—an occurrence locals describe as nearly a decade in the making.
This unusual phenomenon was triggered by a powerful cold air mass accompanying the weather system, which caused temperatures to plummet even in traditionally warmer low-altitude regions, creating the perfect conditions for snow.
According to forecast insights from Kashmir Weather, the region is set for a brief reprieve with largely dry conditions expected over the next 48 hours. However, this window for restoration and snow clearance will be short-lived.
A fresh, moderate Western Disturbance is already projected to approach the Union Territory by Monday afternoon, January 26. This upcoming system is expected to bring another round of light to moderate rain and snow across various parts of J&K, potentially complicating ongoing efforts to restore power and clear vital highway links.
Residents are advised to utilize the current dry spell to prepare for the next wave of wintry weather.
