J&K Traffic Advisory: NH-44 Open for Two-Way Traffic with Night Travel Restrictions
Jammu/Srinagar | March 22, 2026: The Traffic Police Headquarters for Jammu and Kashmir has issued a comprehensive travel plan for Monday, March 23, following a period of restricted movement on the strategic NH-44.
Over the past 24 hours, slow traffic was observed due to single-lane conditions between Marog and Kishtwari Pather, exacerbated by the breakdown of two heavy motor vehicles.
For tomorrow, subject to fair weather, two-way traffic for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), private cars, and heavy goods carriers will be permitted from both Jammu and Srinagar.
However, authorities have strongly advised passengers to prefer daytime travel, as night journeys remain highly risky due to the apprehension of shooting stones, landslides, and ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal.
Commuters are urged to maintain strict lane discipline, as overtaking and wrong-lane driving are expected to cause severe congestion on the narrow stretches.
Regarding other major routes, the Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag Road (NH-244) remains temporarily closed for all vehicular movement following recent administrative orders.
On the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari (SSG) road, only LMVs equipped with anti-skid chains will be allowed to ply from Srinagar toward Kargil, provided road maintenance agencies give a green signal.
Due to avalanche threats along the Zoji La axis, no movement will be permitted after 1500 hrs. Similarly, the Mughal Road will allow LMV traffic from both sides between 1100 hrs and 1500 hrs, connecting Poonch and Shopian.
Travelers are advised to confirm the current status of these routes by contacting the Traffic Control Units in Jammu (0191-2459048), Srinagar (0194-2450022), or Ramban (9419993745) before starting their journey.
