J&K Public Safety Act Case: Court Reserves Judgment on MLA Mehraj Malik’s Detention

JAMMU, Feb 23, 2026 — In a significant legal development regarding political detention in Jammu and Kashmir, Court has officially reserved its judgment in the Public Safety Act (PSA) case involving MLA Mehraj Malik.

During the scheduled hearing on Monday, legal representatives from both sides concluded their final arguments, bringing the high-profile judicial review to its penultimate stage.

The MLA was previously detained under the stringent PSA, a law that permits preventive detention on grounds of maintaining public order and national security—a move that was subsequently challenged in court to question the validity and specific grounds of his confinement.

Following the completion of detailed submissions, the court has provided a one-week window for all concerned parties to submit any additional written synopses or supporting documents if they choose to do so.

Once this stipulated period concludes, the court is expected to deliver its final verdict on whether the detention remains legally sustainable.

The case has remained under intense judicial consideration since its inception, and the upcoming ruling is anticipated to be a landmark decision regarding the application of the PSA against elected representatives in the region.
