GANDERBAL, JANUARY 08: In a decisive move against environmental crime, the Jammu and Kashmir Police successfully intercepted a major timber smuggling attempt and arrested the prime suspect. During a routine checkpoint at Wussan, a team from the Ganderbal Police Station flagged down a suspicious load carrier (Registration No. JK16B-4440) carrying eight logs of illegally felled Kail timber.
Although the driver initially abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene to evade capture, the police immediately seized the illicit cargo and the vehicle after discovering the timber was being transported without any legal permits.
Following the seizure, a specialized police team was formed under the direction of SSP Ganderbal, Khalil Ahmad Poswal-JKPS, to track down the offender. Through persistent efforts, the authorities apprehended the accused, identified as Irshad Ahmad Dar of Nilahnajwan, Kangan.
A formal case (FIR No. 04/2026) has been registered under Section 303 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 26 of the Forest Act.
The J&K Police have reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the region’s natural resources and warned that strict legal action will continue against anyone involved in the illegal timber trade.
