J&K Minister Satish Sharma Inaugurates Open Chess Tournament; Vows to Bolster Sports Ecosystem

JAMMU, February 01, 2026 — Minister for Youth Services & Sports, Satish Sharma, today officially inaugurated the Open Chess Tournament in Trikuta Nagar, emphasizing the government’s steadfast commitment to fostering a robust sports culture across Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a diverse gathering of players, coaches, and sports enthusiasts, the Minister highlighted that the administration is focused on strengthening both indoor and outdoor sports infrastructure. He praised the strategic nature of chess, noting that it is a powerful tool for sharpening intellect, discipline, and problem-solving abilities—essential life skills that help prepare the youth for various professional and personal challenges.

The Minister reiterated that under the current vision of inclusive development, the government is working to provide comprehensive institutional support and better opportunities for athletes at the grassroots level.

He specifically commended the Jammu District Chess Association and private partners for their role in identifying local talent and providing competitive platforms for young minds.

By nurturing “mind sports” like chess, Sharma stated that the UT is building a balanced ecosystem that keeps the youth engaged in constructive activities.

The tournament saw high participation across all age groups, signaling a significant surge in the popularity of competitive chess within the region.
