J&K Medical Education Milestone: NMC Approves 24 Super-Specialty PG Seats for Jammu, Srinagar GMCs and SKIMS
JAMMU, Feb 21: In a major leap toward establishing Jammu and Kashmir as a premier hub for specialized medical education, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 24 new super-specialty postgraduate (PG) seats across three premier institutions.
The seat expansion is distributed among GMC Jammu, GMC Srinagar, and SKIMS Soura, covering critical disciplines such as Cardiology, Urology, Pulmonary Medicine, Medical Gastroenterology, and Pediatric Surgery. Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakeena Itoo, hailed the development as a transformative milestone, noting that the addition includes specialized fields like Clinical Immunology, Rheumatology, and Neuro-Anaesthesia, which will significantly bolster the region’s academic and clinical capacity.
Minister Itoo emphasized that this achievement reflects the Omar Abdullah-led government’s strategic push to elevate healthcare standards and reduce the need for patient referrals outside the Union Territory.
By providing advanced training opportunities locally, the move is expected to empower young doctors and ensure that high-quality, specialized healthcare services are accessible closer to home. Specifically, GMC Jammu secured four seats each in DM Cardiology and M.Ch Urology, while GMC Srinagar was granted ten seats across five streams.
SKIMS Srinagar received six seats in niche fields like Pediatric Anaesthesia. The Minister lauded the faculty and administrations for their rigorous compliance with NMC standards and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to further investments in medical infrastructure and human resource development.
