J&K Legislative Assembly Grants Extension to House Committee for Jal Jeevan Mission Audit
JAMMU April 01, 2026 — During the ongoing Budget Session, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly officially approved a tenure extension for the House Committee tasked with investigating the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) across the Union Territory.
The motion, moved by Committee Chairman Justice Hasnain Masoodi and passed via a voice vote, initially sought a three-month window to ensure a comprehensive review of the massive water infrastructure project.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather noted that while the committee has already completed a significant portion of its workload, the sheer scale of the task—which involves examining approximately 3,200 Water Supply Schemes (WSSs)—necessitates additional time for a thorough and accurate final report.
The extension comes amid intense deliberation within the House, where several legislators, including Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, Sajad Gani Lone, and Sham Lal Sharma, raised critical concerns regarding the ground-level execution of the mission.
Members emphasized the urgent need to augment completed schemes for public use, release outstanding deposits for finished works, and expedite any pending projects to ensure the mission’s goals are met.
By granting this additional time, the Assembly aims to facilitate a transparent and detailed audit of the JJM’s progress, ensuring that the multi-crore rural piped-water initiative effectively reaches every household in Jammu and Kashmir while maintaining strict administrative accountability.
