J&K Education Update: Schools in Summer Zone to Reopen on January 19; Minister Sakina Itoo
Jammu January 16, 2026 — Minister for Health and Education, Sakina Itoo, has officially announced that schools in the summer zone of Jammu and Kashmir will reopen this coming Monday, January 19.
Addressing concerns regarding the academic calendar, the Minister clarified that the decision to resume classes is driven by the need to complete pending syllabi and ensure that students’ education remains on track.
Despite the ongoing winter chill, the government has prioritized academic continuity to prevent any further lag in the curriculum for the current session.
The Minister also shared her vision regarding the establishment of the National Law University (NLU). Sakina Itoo emphasized that the location of the university within Srinagar is secondary to its primary goal: providing high-quality legal education to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.
She noted that the institution will offer local students an invaluable opportunity to pursue law at a premier level without having to leave the Union Territory, thereby fostering a new generation of legal professionals within the region.
Responding to political narratives suggesting a divide between Jammu and Srinagar, the Minister issued a strong statement on regional unity. She asserted that for the Omar Abdullah-led government, Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh are considered a single, inseparable entity.
“Our leaders view Jammu and Kashmir as one, and it will remain so,” she stated, reiterating the government’s commitment to equitable development and inclusive governance across all provinces, regardless of geographic boundaries.
