SRINAGAR, February 13, 2026 – Strengthening the healthcare landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo informed the Legislative Assembly on Friday that nearly 10,000 cancer cases were registered across the region’s premier hospitals in 2025. SKIMS Soura continues to be the primary hub for oncology, recording over 16,000 cases in the last three years alone.
While the data shows a marginal year-on-year increase—with SKIMS reporting 5,791 cases in 2025—the Minister clarified that this trend is largely attributed to enhanced diagnostic capabilities and improved detection rates rather than a confirmed spike in incidence. Government Medical Colleges (GMC) in Jammu and Srinagar also saw significant patient loads, reflecting a more robust screening system across the Union Territory.
To meet the growing demand, the government is aggressively expanding its medical infrastructure. Currently, the State Cancer Institute (SCI) at SKIMS is 80% functional, with a dedicated proposal for specialized medical and paramedical staff recruitment currently under active review. In a major boost to diagnostic services, the government has granted administrative approval for a new PET scan machine at GMC Srinagar, valued at ₹16 crore.
This follows a successful surge in diagnostic output at SKIMS, where PET scans increased from 1,410 in 2024 to 2,250 in 2025.
By phased operationalization of facilities and the procurement of advanced machinery, the administration aims to reduce waiting times and provide comprehensive, localized tertiary care for cancer patients across Jammu and Kashmir.
