J&K Budget Session 2026: Jal Jeevan Mission to Phase Out Water Tanker Reliance in Rural Areas
JAMMU, MARCH 31: During the ongoing Budget Session 2026, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir underscored its commitment to permanent water security, stating that the completion of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) will drastically reduce rural dependence on temporary tanker services.
Representing the Jal Shakti Department, Minister for Agriculture Javid Ahmad Dar addressed a Calling Attention Motion moved by MLA Baldev Raj Sharma concerning water scarcity in the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi constituency.
The Minister assured the Legislative Assembly that the government is strictly adhering to established regulatory norms to ensure an uninterrupted water supply, highlighting that the expansion of piped infrastructure is the primary strategy for long-term sustainability across the Union Territory.
While the focus remains on robust infrastructure, the Minister acknowledged the need for contingency planning during seasonal spikes. He informed the House that private tankers would continue to be hired on an as-needed basis to mitigate shortages during peak summer demand, occasional technical disruptions, or high-influx pilgrimage periods.
However, the overarching goal of the JJM remains the transition toward a reliable, tap-based delivery system. By strengthening the core water supply network, the government aims to minimize reliance on emergency measures and enhance the overall quality of life and service delivery for residents and visitors in Jammu and Kashmir.
